At just four months old, Missy the Pomeranian came in with bilateral leg fractures – a challenge no puppy should have to endure. After being brought to our clinic with suspected broken legs, diagnostic imaging confirmed a serious injury: bilateral fractures of both front limbs, affecting the mid-radius and ulna in each leg.
Using both dorso-palmar and lateral X-ray views, our team was able to fully assess the extent of Missy’s injuries and develop the best treatment plan for her recovery.
Surgical Repair
Missy underwent orthopaedic surgery with Vet Matt, where both fractures were carefully repaired. To provide maximum stability and support healing, each leg was stabilised using 1.5mm 7-hole plates placed in compression, securing six cortices on either side of the fracture sites.
This type of repair is designed to promote proper bone healing while restoring strength and function to the affected limbs.
Despite her young age and the severity of her injuries, Missy handled the procedure exceptionally well and quickly became a favourite among our team thanks to her brave and resilient nature.
The Importance of Post-Operative Care
Following surgery, Missy’s recovery plan included splinting for the first two weeks, with splint changes scheduled every three to five days depending on skin condition and wound healing progress.
One of the most important aspects of her recovery was strict crate rest. Limiting activity after orthopaedic surgery is essential to allow the bones and implants to heal properly and reduce the risk of complications.
Her owners did a fantastic job following her recovery instructions, giving Missy the best possible chance of a successful outcome.
A Fantastic Recovery Update
Several weeks after surgery, Missy returned for her post-operative X-rays, and we were delighted with the results. The images showed that healing was progressing beautifully, and she was cleared to gradually begin increasing her exercise levels.
The transformation has been incredible. According to her owner, Missy is thriving at home, full of personality, wonderfully sassy, and perhaps just a little bit naughty! Seeing her confidence, energy, and cheeky spirit return has been one of the most rewarding parts of her recovery journey.
Looking Ahead
Recovering from bilateral leg fractures is no small feat, especially for such a young puppy. Missy’s progress is a testament to the success of her surgery, the dedication of her owners, and her own remarkable determination.
We are incredibly proud of how far she has come and look forward to watching her continue to grow stronger with every passing week.
Well done, Missy. Everyone here is cheering you on every step of the way, and we can’t wait to see what adventures lie ahead for this brave little Pomeranian.
